One of my favorite patterns to wear in the fall is plaid. I love all of the colors, and how it signifies crisp, autumn days. Whenever I wear plaid, I think "How can I pretty this up?" Although it is a pattern I adore, it can look a little "cowgirl-ish" and that usually isn't the look I am going for. Here are some fun plaid ideas to incorporate into your fall wardrobe without feeling like you are in costume:

Plaid gets even prettier (and positively playful) in this sheer, elegant design from Loft at Northshore Mall {$59.50}. Wear with jeans for a casual look, or tucked into a skirt for the office.

This adorable babydoll coat from Mural at Nordstrom at Nortshore Mall {$138} balances sweet coyness with a little smolder.

This princess-seamed bodice brings a a gorgeous feminine shape to this plaid top from White House | Black Market at Northshore Mall {SALE $29.99}. I'd love to put this with a black leather skirt!

These plaid pointed-toe flats from Forever XXI at Northshore Mall {$16.80} are the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe. Paired with cropped ankle pants? Yes, please!

My rules-of-thumb for wearing plaid are:

1. Pull out one solid color from the pattern to complement it and accessorize.

2. Use one plaid garment as the focal point - too much is too much.

3. Layer. Plaid looks great under a fitted jacket, with a scarf, etc.

Whether you are spending the day at the farmer's market, antique shopping or in a meeting, plaid can be casual, cozy or chic. I hope you are enjoying your fabulous fall wardrobe this season.

Yours in style & flattery,
Tara
